I made it a point to take a pole or hoop class wherever I go. When I visited Cebu last year, I met Phil at Gold’s Gym J Centre. A year after, he was able to fulfill his dream of opening his very own pole and aerial arts studio. I felt at ease being in the studio as it have a similar vibe to my home base at Pole Dolls Dance Studio in Manila.
Pole Sphinx is located at CJRS Building beside Skyrise 1, around 5 to 10-minute walk from the main entrance of Cebu I.T. Park. The studio has a high ceiling with 3 poles, 3 silks, 2 hoops, and thick crash mats for students to use. Currently they offer pole, aerial silks, ballet and yoga classes.
Prior my trip, I got in touch with Phil and asked if they already offer aerial hoop (aka lyra) class. Unfortunately, they still do not. Then we came to an agreement– I can attend a pole class and in return, I share my knowledge on aerial hoops to his instructors. It was a good deal for me because not only do I get to attend a class for free, but I also get to share my passion for the sport.
Teacher Jane and I had a 1-on-1 lyra session before the pole class. I shared with her some of the tricks and conditioning styles I learned from my lyra mama Karen. I felt so thrilled and fulfilled that a day will come I will be the one who’ll share my knowledge. It was actually a first for me to teach someone so I kind of felt scared at first, but as we went along it felt at ease. 🙂
After our hoop session was the pole fitness class. I was so tired I wasn’t able to do all the warm up exercises properly. 😀 But hey, that didn’t stop me from participating. Our instructor is teacher Welchie, a good friend of Phil. From what I remember, they are always partners in doubles performances, and that she will be competing in PPC next year. All the best teacher Welchie!
She taught me a variation of a trick I know called shoulder split dismount. At first I was hesitant to do it because I thought I will fall off the pole. Good thing teacher Welchie and teacher Liz was there to assist me. After several tries, I was able to do it correctly on my own. Yey! 🙂
Aside from the classes, I also like how I didn’t felt left out and how homey the studio was. Everyone was so lively and it didn’t matter whether you are a beginner or intermediate student. What’s important is that you share the same love for the sport. ❤
In summary, my rating for Pole Sphinx are:
- Parking area: N/A (you can park somewhere within the vicinity)
If you visit Cebu City and in for something different, try joining a pole class at this studio. ~~
